Konryoeng valley has been deeply wounded by the indescribable massacre during the Korean war. The soil was transformed, excavated and refilled. The forest was later pushed away in the background for fields and buildings.

Once the activities hiding the excavation pits are removed, the stream is revealed to create the main stage of the Park. The surrounding forest is no longer contained and flows freely. Large green strips flood the valley to carve a unique scenery of densely shaded areas and open meadows. The flow is strong enough to overtake the road and physically reconnect the two sides of the valley.

Contrasting with the sinuous landscape, the architecture of memorial hall is long and linear. Three thin volumes occupy the southern part of the site allowing the forest to flow freely. The volume is simple and strong, giving a sense of direction and time, moving uninterrupted throughout the whole spaces.

As an indoor journey through history, Educational spaces, Memorial Hall and Exhibition spaces are continuously connected. They dialogue carefully with the surrounding nature to display scenic backgrounds in a constant play of lights and shadows. There, visitors and local communities can learn, sorrow and forgive. More than a park, a museum or a memorial, it is a shelter and a gathering place. A gate to enter their journey through memory.
